Business Need

  • Eliminate Tape and Tape library-based backup
  • Create a scalable S3 bucket for normal backup and use AWS Glacier for long-term retention requirements
  • Seamless backup data flow from on-premises to AWS cloud
  • Ease of management without using traditional Tapes/Tape library
  • Avoid the use of susceptible tape media for backup
  • Reduction in TCO by eliminating Tape media for backup
  • Save costs from removing Tape Library and its maintenance

HARMAN Solution Highlights

HARMAN has been part of the customer journey from inception and built a robust backup solution on AWS cloud. As the amount of data backup grew, HARMAN wanted to leverage AWS cloud-based
storage for SHS backup requirements.

  • Designed, architected, and built the AWS cloud-based backup solution. S3 and AWS glacier was adapted as the backup solution using Cloud boost appliance
  • On-premises solution had data domain for data deduplication which helped reduce the total backup data that would flow to AWS environment
  • Integrated 10GB link which ensured ease of backup data flow from on-premises on to S3 bucket
  • Cloud boost appliance was adapted to pump backup data from the on-premises data domain to AWS. Networker was used as backup software to manage the backup metadata that holds the details on the backup schedules
  • 10GB link was used to boost the flow of backup data from on-premises to the cloud
  • The setup consists of networker as backup software, on-premises data domain for data deduplication which reduced the total amount of data to be backed-up. The backup process included monthly incremental and weekly backup
  • Some of the specific requirements of long-term data retention requirements were also met using AWS glacier
  • Cloud Boost appliance was used to pump data from on-premises to AWS cloud
  • S3 was used to hold the backup data and AWS glacier was adapted to meet the long-term retention requirements
  • The solution eliminated the use of traditional Tape and Tape library and reduced its maintenance cost
  • Use of S3 and AWS glacier increased the availability of backup data
  • A combination of S3 and AWS glacier helped meet the immediate backup requirement and long-term retention data request
  • Integration of on-premises backup with AWS cloud-based solution helped reduce cost and ease of backup management

Business Benefits

  • One of the limitations in on-premises backup is the increased cost of managing Tape media and Tape library, the same was reduced significantly along with maintenance costs and TCO
  • Avoided the use of Tape media
  • Easy integration of backup with AWS S3 and glacier for long-term retention
  • Scalable technology platform built on AWS S3 and glacier helped manage the constant increase in backup data
  • Ability to handle large volumes of data backup with almost no limit on the amount of backup that can be done
